AC Blowing Warm Air? Quick Troubleshooting Guide

By Texaserv Dispatch2026-07-07

Check the Thermostat Settings

It sounds obvious, but ensure your thermostat is set to "Cool" and the fan is set to "Auto" instead of "On". If the fan is set to "On", it will blow air even when the compressor isn't running.

Inspect the Air Filter

A severely clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing the evaporator coils to freeze over. This turns your AC into a block of ice that blows warm air. Change your filter every 30-90 days.

Check the Outdoor Unit (Condenser)

Is the outdoor unit running? Ensure leaves, debris, or overgrown bushes aren't blocking airflow. The condenser needs at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides.

Check the Breaker

Sometimes the outdoor unit trips the circuit breaker. Check your electrical panel to see if the AC breaker is tripped. If it trips repeatedly, do not turn it back on—you have an electrical issue.

Low Refrigerant (Freon Leak)

If you hear a hissing sound or see ice on the refrigerant lines, you likely have a leak. Air conditioners do not "consume" refrigerant; if it's low, there's a leak that must be repaired by a licensed HVAC technician.
